Application notes

Mechanical or adhesive? Start with the surface.

Understand the differences between drilled-hole mechanical packers and surface-bonded adhesive injection ports.

Mechanical packers are installed in prepared holes; adhesive packers are bonded to the component surface. The right choice depends on the repair design, substrate condition, permitted drilling and injection system.

When a drilled-hole connection is specified

A mechanical packer typically uses a rubber clamping section to anchor its body in a prepared hole. This creates a connection between the injection line and the repair area.

Check the actual borehole requirement, embedment arrangement and access for tightening. Hole cleaning and sound material around the connection are part of the installation procedure, not optional finishing details.

When a bonded surface port is specified

An adhesive packer is positioned over the prepared crack and bonded to the surface. This can be useful when drilling is restricted by the repair detail.

The bond must be suitable for the surface condition, injection material and pressure. Loose coatings, contamination or an unsuitable adhesive can compromise the connection. Follow the specified adhesive curing time before injection.

Avoid a simple high-pressure / low-pressure rule

Material or mounting style alone does not establish a safe operating pressure. Check the product-specific limits and the complete repair system. The substrate can be the limiting factor even when the hardware is rated for more.

Questions that settle the choice

  1. Does the repair specification allow drilling?
  2. Is the surface suitable for a reliable adhesive bond?
  3. Where must the injection path intersect the defect?
  4. Which connection and injection material will be used?
  5. How will ports be removed and the surface finished?

Use these answers to compare steel packers with adhesive packers. Confirm the final arrangement with the person responsible for the repair specification.

These guides support product selection. Project-specific repair design, installation and working limits must be confirmed for the actual structure and injection system.
